Christian Comics Pioneer and internationally known tract cartoonist Ron Wheeler held his first Cartoon Camp in 2008. Over 30 kids attended 1 of 2 cartoon camps (1 for elementary age and 1 for Junior and Senior High students) taught by Wheeler in his home studio.
In the Summer of 2009 Wheeler expanded to 4 cartoon camps for around 100 students. In 2010 he held 5 weeks of morning and afternoon camps for 67 students.
Camp lessons include the basics of drawing, starting with realistic drawing and transitioning into cartooning. Students learn how to sculpt cartoon heads with modeling clay and use that as a reference for drawing characters from different angles. Students also gain preliminary information on how to create a comic strip.
Planned for 2011:
2 partial day camps for elementary age and 2 partial day camps for Junior High & older, in June and July. |

COMIX35 offers seminars for Christian communicators who want to put comics to work in their evangelism and discipleship materials.
Seminars are very "hands-on" for students, with opportunities to create comic strips and tracts during class which can go into print immediately.
Sessions cover Identifying Your Audience, Plotting & Scripting, Storyboarding & Visual Storytelling, Editing/Art Directing, and Cultural, Communication, and Evangelism Strategy Considerations. (This is not an introductory "how to draw" class, although usually some art instruction is provided during each seminar.)
Over 30 COMIX35 events have been held worldwide for more than 760 people from 45 countries.

The first School of Cartooning & Animation for Missions (SoCam) was held in 2010 with students from Indonesia, Germany, and Australia. The second SoCam starts 1 July 2011.
The SoCam is a six-month, second-level YWAM school, devoted to training students in using cartoons, comic books, anime, and animated media to communicate the Gospel in culturally relevant ways.
This school is a project of Create International Thailand which was established in 2007 in Chiang Mai, Thailand, to target unreached peoples in China and Indo-China specifically.
A YWAM Discipleship Training School is a prerequisite. Sign up now for the next DTS in Chiang Mai, starting in January 2012, to be eligible for the third SoCam.
