Will US Comic Bore & Confuse the French?
Christian comics publisher Gino Balocco, of Editions Husky in Peyrus, France, reports that the French translation/adaptation of US comics creator Jesse Hamm's Comics to Bore and Confuse You has just been printed. Bate et Fonte is a 99-page comic book in the US size, with a color cover. It addresses issues such as "suicide and other youth problems (sex, success, abortion, media)," says Balocco. Regrettaby, this could be the last Husky title to see print, as Balocco is becoming "less and less involved in comics and publishing." Husky has been the producer of several Christian graphic novels and comic albums such as L'Apocalypse de Jean (2006), Jésus chez les Pharisiens (2005), Les Oubliés: L'Ogre d'Ouganda (2005), Les épées de Philistie: David et Goliath (2001) and Frère Jack: Noé Noé matelot (2001). All these books may be purchased online at Librairie Chrétienne CLC France. [SOURCE: Editions Husky, 23 November 2007] |

Texas USA-based Head Press Publishing reports that author/Illustrator Robert James Luedke will extend his award-winning Eye Witness graphic novel series into an additional volume "making the series a tetralogy (utilizing the ancient Greek term for theatrical works constructed in four parts)." While writing and laying out the third volume, Eye Witness: Rise of the Apostle, Luedke realized it would exceed 170 pages and made the decision to expand it to two volumes. Eye Witness: Rise of the Apostle is scheduled for release in August 2008, while the fourth and currently untitled volume is set tentatively for a release in late 2009. Luedke's Eye Witness: Acts of the Spirit was the winner in the comics category at the 2007 Hollywood Book Festival and won a silver medal for dramatic graphic novels in this year’s Independent Publisher Book Awards. Manga in Uganda
NEXT reports that MANGA MESSIAH has been well-received in Uganda. Roald Lidal of NEXT met recently with Uganda's Minister of Education and Sports, the Minister of Ethics and Integrity, a Commissioner in the Ministry of Education, the Educational Coordinator of the Church of Uganda, and the First Lady. Everyone was very excited about the MANGA MESSIAH project. The Minister of Ethics and Integrity said, "Wonderful, absolutely wonderful. Anti-Christian forces are targeting the schools today. Now is truly the time for something like this." The leader of the Uganda Christian Teacher’s Association stated, "I read this book and it is great. I also showed it to several children, and they literally fought over it, as they wanted it so much. Please know this book project will be a success in Uganda." 800,000 copies of MANGA MESSIAH will be distributed in the country, which is about one book for every 10 school children. "As I saw the children and their openness to the Gospel and the teaching of the Bible, I became burdened to increase the initial amount," said Lidal. "Uganda has literally been flooded with Japanese cars, and I believe we can export something far more important we can flood the country with the Word of God by supplying MANGA MESSIAH to the children," he concluded. Hairy Polarity Comic Reveals Dangers of HP Movie
The dangerous spiritual nature of the new Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix movie, due to be released next week, is exposed through the comic book Hairy Polarity and the Sinister Sorcery Satire, published by Revival Fires International in Louisiana USA. This 32-page, full color comic may be viewed and purchased online or at Revival Fires Crusades across the USA. Although it is presented in satirical form, the story informs readers of many explicit examples of evil in the Potter books and movies. "While Harry Potter is popular even among many Christians, it presents a Godless universe, one in which the most powerful wizard wins," says Evangelist Tim Todd, President of Revival Fires. "This is not the vision of the universe that Christian parents should want to instill in their children; nor is 'white magic' an appropriate response to evil." Todd is encouraging concerned parents and leaders to obtain quantities of this comic book and distribute them as an informative resource. [SOURCE: Revival Fires International, 5 July 2007] |

Comics Creators Serve Their Community
In India, in the home town of Christian comics publisher Mr. George Koshy, people are suffering from a viral epidemic known as "Chikun Guniya." In his district alone, more than one million have been affected with this unusually contagious disease, and several thousand have died. Everyday 20 or more people die in his state. Mr. Koshy's cartoonist, Mr. Shaji Mathew, is arranging a cartoon exhibition in various places to create awareness about the precautions that need to be taken. In addition, Mr. Koshy designed a color poster (shown here) and printed 5000 copies that were distributed in schools, hospitals and public places. Mr. Koshy states, "We pasted it all over the town ... everywhere the public gathers. We believe this is our responsibility to the public as Christian believers." They printed almost 10,000 copies of a smaller, black & white version of the poster and distributed these through newspaper boys. Mr. Koshy concludes, "We are not yet out of the problem. We specially request your prayers." [SOURCE: Mr. George Koshy, 2 July 2007] |

Christian Comics & Games for Troops in Iraq
A group of soldiers in Iraq are putting together a Role-Playing Games (RPG) convention and gaming tournament. The Ziggurat Con, which will be held Saturday June 9 from 1200 to 2100 hours at the Community Activity Center of Camp Adder/Tallil Airbase, is open to all allied military personnel and civilian contractors in Iraq. They are expecting around 300 people to attend. SPC David Amberson, one of the organizers, says they need gaming materials as well as prizes and giveaways for the troops, including comic books, graphic novels, and PDF products. Popular Cartoonist Dead at Age 76
Born Again US comic strip artist Johnny Hart, who created the popular B.C. and The Wizard of Id strips, has died from a stroke. His family reports he was working at his drawing table at his home in Nineveh, NY USA when it happened. (Creators Syndicate has posted a Memorial page for him here.) Hart was born February 18, 1931 in Endicott, NY about 135 miles northwest of New York City. His B.C. strip started in 1958 and is reported to be in more than 1,300 newspapers today. The Wizard of Id was launched in 1964 is said to be in more than 1,000 papers. Hart was a six-time winner of the National Cartoonists Society Award for Best Humor Strip and a recipient of the prestigious Reuben Award for Best Cartoonist of the Year. After he became a follower of Jesus Christ in 1987 Hart's faith was reflected clearly in many of his strips. Although these strips were often controversial, Hart continued to produce them until his death. "Too many Christians have bought into the lie that we shouldn't mention our beliefs," he noted in 1995. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the Nineveh Presbyterian Church, 2997 N.Y. Route 7, Nineveh, NY. The family will receive friends from 4 - 8 p.m. Wednesday and 4 - 8 p.m. Thursday at the Osterhoudt-Madden Funeral Home. Please pray for Hart's wife, Bobby, and two daughters, Patti and Perri. Editor of Syndicated Christian Strip Dies
Jay Kennedy, editor-in-chief of King Features Syndicate, died Thursday 15 March in an accident while on vacation in Costa Rica. He was 50 years old. Kennedy had long championed the idea of a "faith-based comic strip" at King Features, and Heaven' s Love Thrift Shop became one of his "pet projects." Christian Comics Pioneer Kevin Frank reports, "Jay was influential in my strip, beyond just giving it the greenlight. He suggested the thrift store angle to me, and the name is totally his ... We had talked about spiritual matters while creating my strip, but he certainly did not consider himself a believer. Still, he was very interested, so who knows what was going on in his heart?" Kennedy is survived by his mother, two brothers and a sister. Please pray for them during this difficult time. [SOURCE: King Features web site, 20 March 2007] |

Student Allowed to Hand Out TTFY Bibles
A principal at a North Carolina USA elementary school has admitted that he and a teacher were wrong to stop a student from giving copies of The Truth for Youth Bible as Valentine's Day gifts to his classmates. The student, Adam Prevette of Wilkesboro, was twice prevented from giving the Bibles to his friends during noninstructional time, and his parents were also told that the school would not allow it. The family contacted Liberty Counsel in Orlando, Florida USA and received assurance that Adam had the right to pass out the Bibles. Mathew D. Staver, Founder of Liberty Counsel and Dean of Liberty University School of Law, commented: "Students have a constitutional right to give Bibles to their friends on Valentine's Day while other students are giving out cards. Students are not hostages of public schools. They have the right to share their opinions, whether written or spoken, during noninstructional time, which includes before and after school, between classes, during lunch and at recess." Please pray for Adam as he takes a stand for God on his public school campus. The Truth for Youth Bible contains 100 pages of color comics, designed to teach moral values to youth, along with the entire text of the New Testament. | UPDATE: TTFY publisher Tim Todd reports, "As a result of this confrontation, Alyssa, an eighth grader who was given one of the Bibles, gave it to a friend at another school. Her friend gave her life to Jesus Christ. Now Alyssa and her friend are going to start a Bible Club at their school and 8 teachers are wanting to get involved in this. We know all things work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to His purpose." [SOURCE: Tim Todd Revival Fires Ministries, 26 February 2007] |
