The massive May 2006 earthquake in Yogyakarta (Jogja), Indonesia killed the mother of Christian comics artist Toto Winarno and destroyed both his father's house and the local village church.

In response, the Christian comics community raised US$683.00 (approximately 6,220,401 Indonesian Rupiah) in earthquake relief to Toto's family, led by the heroic efforts of the very generous Australian Christian Cartoonist Community.

from Toto, 25 July 2006:

I am very pleased of all you have done for me and family, we are in good condition. We hope can finish our big job on rebuild the house before the rain season, about next three months. Again, Thanks,

Toto and family

from Toto, 16 August 2006:

I received the money today, Thanks,

Toto & Family

from Toto, 15 Sept 2006:

We use the money to buy new monoblock, washtafel, sink, 50 packed of cement (we recently use 250 packed and maybe need appx. 450 until finished the building project) and paying worker for one week.

Toto

from Toto, 11 Nov 2006:

100% of all funds received were passed directly to our brother Toto Winarno in Indonesia.

Please continue to remember Toto and his family in your prayers. During the rebuilding process Toto's father went to be with the Lord, too.

The Australian Christian Cartoonists Community raised support for Toto Winarno's family through sales of their comics, including Dean Rankine's 'Open Your Heart When They Hate Your Guts' and the Aussie anthology 'Pulp Crucifiction' at the 2006 Supanova Pop Culture Expo. If you have ever prayed to see the international Christian comics community join together to support one of their own in need, this was an answer to that prayer! Praise God!

International Christians cartoonists, comics artists, and others donated:

A Letter from Nate Butler...

Dear CCI Site Visitors:

Christian comics artist Toto Winarno is well known to our ministry. He attended our very first comics training seminar in 1996, and he and I have been friends and have worked together ever since.

In the past I stayed at his home, the same house that was destroyed by the earthquake. At that time I also met his parents who died during and after the quake.

Toto did not come to us asking for help, but he is a brother in Christ and a member of the international Christian Comics community. We chose to assist his family as part of our ministry, and Toto accepted this help gladly.

Thank you to everyone who sent in their donations for Toto Winarno through this site. Toto and I are both very grateful for your support.

Blessings,

Nate Butler
